Rotorua and Te Kiri Trek
Day two of the tour and we were in Rotorua, the place with the hot springs and where it smells of egg! The day started off with a visit to the Maori village of Whakarewarewa. This included a demonstration of the Poi Dance and the Haka, a wander around the village seeing how they live and use the geothermal energy, a show of native dances, and a hangi meal, which was cooked in a wooden box in the ground (which was very good and didn't taste of egg). The afternoon had a number of options but the one I chose was the Te Kiri Trek, where a Maori guide, Roger Te Kiri took us to places off the beaten track such as a viciously bubbling mud pool, took us to the top of an active volcano and swimming in a hot river, all combined with getting from A-B by four wheeled drive vehicles.
